You may have heard of people drinking lots of pineapple juice before and after getting their wisdom teeth removed. Lots of videos online have shown people very happy and supposedly recovered from their wisdom teeth surgeries after a few days. They claim that pineapple juice was the secret to their quick recovery. But does it really help with recovery or is it something else?
What are the benefits of pineapples themselves?
Pineapples have a lot of manganese, copper, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and antioxidants. These kinds of nutrients and minerals are essential to healthy functions. Antioxidants work to protect cells at the molecular level, preventing diseases like cancer and heart related diseases. Studies have also found pineapples to reduce inflammation in the body and increase one’s immune system’s capabilities. However, pineapple juice has a lot of sugar in it, which is not as healthy as pineapples by themselves.
Pros and Cons of Pineapple Juice
Including the many benefits previously mentioned, pineapple juice has the enzyme bromelain in it. This enzyme can reduce swelling and pain, which may be why many people online experience somewhat quick recovery from wisdom teeth removal. However, it is a bad idea to drink lots of pineapple juice before wisdom teeth removal because too much of it can cause diarrhea and nausea. As mentioned before, pineapple juice also has a lot of sugar in it, which makes it dangerous for many people to drink too much of it. It can cause dangerous blood spikes in people with diabetes.
What can I do instead of drinking pineapple juice?
Try eating raw pineapples. They are good for you and do not have the sugar additives found in pineapple juice. Icing your teeth can help with the pain too. Also, talk to your dentist about pain medication. Try taking prescribed pain medications and antibiotics to ease the swelling and inflammation after surgery. For instance, taking the bromelain enzyme itself is much better than drinking lots of sugary juice.
